Building Green

Choosing to build with Freeport can help you be a little more environmentally responsible.

According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Centre, the “typical” waste for a new 2,000 square foot site built home is 8,000 pounds or 50 cubic yards. In 2000, the cost to dispose of this averaged $511 per home. Consequently, while waste from a site built home typically goes in a landfill, waste from a modular homes is recycled. (www.nahb.org)

“There are ‘green’ principles inherent to the modular construction process that improve construction and on-site performance.”

Here are just some of the ways in which modular construction helps the environment:

  • Shorter construction schedules on-site mean less disturbance, fewer construction pollutants and reduced on-site deliveries.
  • All surplus material in a factory can be recycled, whereas on-site surplus materials end up in a landfill.
  • Modular homes can be built with the use of natural, non-toxic  and sustainable materials to achieve a low-impact living home. For example, geothermal heating and cooling can either be added in the factory or installed on site.

Freeport continues to research and apply more sustainable technologies to our designs as we continually move towards improved building performance and environmental sensitivity.
